Your calculation, step by step

No black boxes
  1. Monthly interest = outstanding balance × 7% ÷ 12.
  2. Base payment = 396.023971 USD; monthly extra = 100 USD.
  3. Apply interest, then each payment, limiting the final payment to the remaining balance plus interest.
  4. Payoff takes 47 months; total interest = 2,867.721782 USD.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your own values in the labeled fields. Check the units and assumptions before comparing results. Only the fields needed for your selected calculation mode are shown.
  2. Your answer updates automatically. Review the calculation steps to see exactly how it was calculated.
  3. Copy, share, save, or download your result. Saved inputs stay on this device.

How the calculation works

Payment = P r / [1 − (1 + r)^−n]; apply extra payments to the balance

Use the remaining principal and remaining term to establish a new baseline schedule. Recurring extras and an optional one-time payment reduce the balance after monthly interest. Compare the resulting duration and interest with the baseline. The model assumes extra payments are applied to principal without fees.

A worked example

A $12,000 balance at 0% over 12 months has a $1,000 scheduled payment. Adding $200 each month pays it off in 10 months.

Reading your result

Use the main result together with its units and supporting figures. Display values are rounded; calculations keep their underlying precision. A change in inputs or assumptions can change the answer. Compare the step-by-step working with your intended use before relying on an estimate.

Frequently asked questions

Can I model a lump sum?

Yes. Enter its amount and the month in which it is paid.

Are prepayment penalties included?

No. Check your agreement separately.
