Gravel Calculator

Estimate gravel volume, supplier-density mass and bulk material cost.

Quantity estimate only. Gravel bulk density depends on material, moisture and compaction; enter a supplier value. Bags and bulk quantities may have different settling.

Your calculation, step by step

No black boxes
  1. Volume = area × depth, converting inches to feet and cubic feet to cubic yards.
  2. Apply 10% allowance: 2.037037 yd³.
  3. Mass = volume in m³ × your entered bulk density in kg/m³.

What if things were different?

Save up to three scenarios, then change your inputs to compare the possibilities.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your own values in the labeled fields. Check the units and assumptions before comparing results. Only the fields needed for your selected calculation mode are shown.
  2. Your answer updates automatically. Review the calculation steps to see exactly how it was calculated.
  3. Copy, share, save, or download your result. Saved inputs stay on this device.

How the calculation works

Volume = area × depth; mass = volume in m³ × bulk density

Area and depth must use compatible units after conversion. The US option takes square feet and inches, returning cubic yards. The metric option takes square meters and centimeters. A supplier-entered bulk density converts volume to mass; density is not an intrinsic fixed constant for every gravel mix.

A worked example

100 ft² covered 3 inches deep needs 25 ft³, or 0.9259259 yd³, before any allowance.

Reading your result

Use the main result together with its units and supporting figures. Display values are rounded; calculations keep their underlying precision. A change in inputs or assumptions can change the answer. Compare the step-by-step working with your intended use before relying on an estimate.

Frequently asked questions

Is the tonnage exact?

No. Moisture, material grading and compaction change bulk density.

Which tons are displayed?

Both metric tonnes and US short tons are labeled separately.
