Mulch Calculator

Estimate bulk mulch volume, bag quantity and the cost of bagged material.

Quantity estimate only. Gravel bulk density depends on material, moisture and compaction; enter a supplier value. Bags and bulk quantities may have different settling.

Your calculation, step by step

No black boxes
  1. Volume = area × depth, converting inches to feet and cubic feet to cubic yards.
  2. Apply 0% allowance: 1.851852 yd³.
  3. Divide volume by bag volume and round up to whole bags.

What if things were different?

Save up to three scenarios, then change your inputs to compare the possibilities.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your own values in the labeled fields. Check the units and assumptions before comparing results. Only the fields needed for your selected calculation mode are shown.
  2. Your answer updates automatically. Review the calculation steps to see exactly how it was calculated.
  3. Copy, share, save, or download your result. Saved inputs stay on this device.

How the calculation works

Bags = ceil[required volume / volume per bag]

Multiply area by the converted depth to find required volume. Bulk results use cubic yards in US mode and cubic meters in metric mode. Bag calculations instead use cubic feet or liters, matching the bag label. Round up whole bags after applying your extra-material allowance.

A worked example

A 100 ft² bed at 3 inches needs 25 ft³. With 2 ft³ bags, round 12.5 up to 13 bags.

Reading your result

Use the main result together with its units and supporting figures. Display values are rounded; calculations keep their underlying precision. A change in inputs or assumptions can change the answer. Compare the step-by-step working with your intended use before relying on an estimate.

Frequently asked questions

Does the calculator choose a layer depth?

No. Enter the depth suitable for your use and product.

Are bag counts rounded?

Yes. Partial bags round up to the next whole bag.
