StatusAbove 100%: unattainable without extra credit
Exam weight20%

Current grade must exclude the final exam and be normalized to the completed coursework. No institutional rounding or extra-credit policy is assumed.

Your calculation, step by step

No black boxes
  1. Target = current grade × (1 − exam weight) + exam score × exam weight.
  2. Required score = (90 − 85 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 110%.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your own values in the labeled fields. Check the units and assumptions before comparing results. Only the fields needed for your selected calculation mode are shown.
  2. Your answer updates automatically. Review the calculation steps to see exactly how it was calculated.
  3. Copy, share, save, or download your result. Saved inputs stay on this device.

How the calculation works

Required final = [target − current × (1 − final weight)] / final weight

Your current grade must describe completed coursework, normalized without the final exam. Enter the final exam weight as a percentage of the whole course. Scores above one hundred show an unattainable target under a standard scale; zero or less means the target is already secured under these assumptions.

A worked example

With 85% coursework, a 20%-weight final and a 90% target, the required exam score is (90 − 85 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 110%.

Reading your result

Use the main result together with its units and supporting figures. Display values are rounded; calculations keep their underlying precision. A change in inputs or assumptions can change the answer. Compare the step-by-step working with your intended use before relying on an estimate.

Frequently asked questions

Why can the answer exceed 100%?

It shows that the requested target is not attainable without extra credit or another policy.

Does it apply school rounding?

No. Enter the target under your institution’s actual policy.
