Your calculation, step by step

No black boxes
  1. Tip = 85 × 20/100 = 17 USD.
  2. Total = 85 + 17 = 102 USD.
  3. Per person = 102 ÷ 2 = 51 USD.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your own values in the labeled fields. Check the units and assumptions before comparing results. Only the fields needed for your selected calculation mode are shown.
  2. Your answer updates automatically. Review the calculation steps to see exactly how it was calculated.
  3. Copy, share, save, or download your result. Saved inputs stay on this device.

How the calculation works

Per-person total = bill × (1 + tip rate / 100) / people

Choose the bill amount on which you want to calculate the tip, then enter your rate and group size. If you prefer a pre-tax tip, use the pre-tax subtotal as the bill. The calculation divides the total equally and displays dollar amounts rounded to cents.

A worked example

An $85 bill with a 20% tip totals $102. Split between 2 people, each share is $51.

Reading your result

Use the main result together with its units and supporting figures. Display values are rounded; calculations keep their underlying precision. A change in inputs or assumptions can change the answer. Compare the step-by-step working with your intended use before relying on an estimate.
