This version requires a positive original value. A zero base is undefined; negative starting values need a separately stated interpretation.

Your calculation, step by step

No black boxes
  1. Base = original value 80.
  2. Change = 100 − 80 = 20.
  3. Percentage change = 20 ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your own values in the labeled fields. Check the units and assumptions before comparing results. Only the fields needed for your selected calculation mode are shown.
  2. Your answer updates automatically. Review the calculation steps to see exactly how it was calculated.
  3. Copy, share, save, or download your result. Saved inputs stay on this device.

How the calculation works

Change % = (new − original) / original × 100

The denominator is the original value, so reversing the two values changes the percentage. This version requires a positive original value and a nonnegative new value. Negative percentage means a decrease. It measures relative change, not the percentage-point difference between two percentages.

A worked example

From 80 to 100, the change is 20 ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%. Reversing from 100 to 80 gives −20%.

Reading your result

Use the main result together with its units and supporting figures. Display values are rounded; calculations keep their underlying precision. A change in inputs or assumptions can change the answer. Compare the step-by-step working with your intended use before relying on an estimate.

Frequently asked questions

Can the original value be zero?

No. Relative percentage change from zero is undefined.

Is this percentage-point change?

No. Percentage points are the direct difference between two percentages.
